Lowering high blood pressure helps prevent strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems. Spironolactone is a "water pill" (diuretic) that causes you to make more urine. This helps your body get rid of extra water and salt. Spironolactone also helps treat or prevent low blood potassium levels and blocks the activity of a certain natural substance (aldosterone) that can cause edema.
